How IR Remote works

What is the method by which IR Remotes (TV, etc.) work. Is it pulse modulation and pulse width is varied? How are the individual controls channelized? Would appreciate a little info on this.
Thanks,
Richard

Download the "IR Remote for the BoeBot" tutorial and read through it.· Go to the main Parallax website and select the Resources tab.· You'll see a list with Downloads on it.· Select that and you'll see a list with Stamps in Class Tutorials Downloads on it.· Select that and you'll see the list of tutorials including the one on IR Remotes.· This discusses IR remote controls in general and specifically how to transmit and receive IR remote control codes using a Stamp.

Thanks Mike, I should have thought of that. What I want to do is install a top-end digital camcorder in my submersible. It comes with IR remote control. So I figure that will be the easiest way to interface with the microcontroller, rather than hardwire.
