What would be the best way to turn a steering wheel?

So my latest project is an autonomous go kart. I am working with my boe-bot before I scale up. A question about steering.

1. What is the best way to hook up a servo to turn the steering wheel?

2. Any way to hook up a servo to push a gas pedal?

Any feedback is great. Thank you!

In answer to question #2)· Mount a cam on the servo.

Thanks! That is a great idea PJ.

About the steering wheel. Could I just use the gears from the tank treads to turn a steering wheel, or is there a better way. I want to use the parallax servo i already have.

Do these servos have the torque needed to do this?

Also, consider eliminating the gas pedal and operate the throttle directly with a servo.

Look at this picture of Parallax's QuadRover - www.parallax.com/Portals/0/Images/Prod/Q/QuadRover03_L.jpg You'll see how they did it.

As a suggestion to control steering wheel. You might consider a continuos rotation servo with a small (maybe even smaller than a bicycle) chain sprocket on it. Attach a very large, as big as the steering wheel sprocket to the wheel. That may give you enough torque to turn the wheel. I believe the Mythbusters have used this arraingement to control a full size car!

    curious_roboticist,

I don't know if this would help for an idea or not... http://forums.parallax.com/showthread.php?p=525233

That picture of the servo controlling the throttle gave me an idea. I could replace the front wheels with the front of a bicycle. A servo with a wheel will be connected to the handlebars. When the servo turns, the wheel turns

Not knowing the size of the cart and other parameters... I wouldn't use a servo, unless you get a high torque digital one (maybe..).· I would just use a motor from a drill·and reverse the polarity on the motor to change the direction.· Perhaps even a wheel chair motor.·
