Any number of 74HC165 chips can be cascaded using the same set of micrcontroller pins.
So you could cascade two 74HC165's for 16bits of input data

For how to cascade 74HC165's you can have a look at
    http://www.parallax.com/dl/docs/books/sw/exp/sw24b.pdf

I have another schematic but relatively new here and cannot see how to attach a file at the moment.

What are you trying to use the shift register for?
If it is a keypad, there are other options to handle 16, 32 or even 64 buttons.

Then if you really want a 16-bit shift register capable of Parallel/serial in and serial out
then there is the NS/Philips made 74F676. Have a look at:

    http://digchip.com/datasheets/download_datasheet.php?id=84634∂-number=74F676

But while I can locate datasheets for this chip could not find any current suppliers amongst my usual sources.

Here is a search engine for finding IC's and many other electronics components:
    http://www.findchips.com/

The results of searching for the 74F676 show numerous suppliers.

Involvement and committment can be best understood by looking at a plate of ham and eggs. The chicken was involved, but the pig was committed. ANON
