The paper offers multiple hypothesis as a method to override calculated doubt.

The authors were attempting to observe and calculate·a·human being's movement
as depicted in a video stream. Single hypothesis modeling (using Kalman filters)
allowed errors to propagate within 12 frames of video.·Their alternative was able
to parse the entire clip of 48 frames.
