I know this has been beat to death but I don't want to make a mistake

I'm making a circuit with a serial port (max 232 to db9). I know this will work but if I want the ability to program the prop with my board can I just add a jumper option so RESET goes to pin 4 (DTR) on the port? The reason for the jumper is so I don't run into any problems when using it as a standard serial port for I/O.

I don't see why not. Just use the reset circuit Parallax use to avoid -12 or +12 v through the reset line.
