Help protecting telephone system and maybe monitoring lines

My main job is as a telecom tech, installing, maintaining, moving, and sometimes removing business telephone systems and their cabling.
We have a customer that has something destroying ports on a trunk card. This is a modern, current production phone system, and it is normally rock solid. I don't know what is destroying the ports. I would love to at least have some kind of protection for 4 to 8 lines. It would be nice to figure out what is going wrong, to prevent it, in other ways. Thus maybe monitoring those lines for whatever is necessary.
