Programming Software cannot find the BASIC Stamp

Hi all,
New this week to the world of BASIC Stamps.
I have purchased a BS2-P24 and BOE (USB version) together with a USB cable. Also purchased a serial 4x20 LCD display.
I have installed the V2.4 BASIC Stamp programming software AND the USB drivers from the Parallax website.
When I plug the USB cable into the PC and the BOE the led near the USB connector flashes briefly.
I have tried operation from both a 9Vdc battery and a 5Vdc regulated power supply but I have a problem to getting started.
When I try to connect to the BASIC Stamp to run/install a program, the LED next to the BS2-P24 flashes briefly and I get a message that no Stamp was found.·
From a check of the USB ports from the programming software it seems that COMM8 it the correct port. COMM8 is removed from the list if I disconnect the USB cable. I have tried selecting AUTO selection and COMM8 but with both settings the programming software indicates (via a pop-up window) that it cannot find the BS2-P24.
Any help in getting the comms between my PC and the BOE + BS2-P24 working would be greatly appreciated.
Regards

Dashed out and bought a 6Vdc power supply and on using that all seems to be working.
