Next "void" project :) Portable Prop II

Just found my next "void" project..

Conversion of a children's laptop toy to the next portable prop.

I'm betting I can either use or replace the LCD with something standard.
Runs on 4 AA batteries as a power source.

Not sure what I'll have to do about the keyboard, perhaps a job for PICAXE or SX.

OBC

OBC, Have you ever tried fooling with the cheap childrens two-way radios? Bought a set the other day for $5, I'll tear into it when I get done with my mini dvd.

    You mean like these?

Not sure what I'd use the transmitter/receiver setup with the prop..

I bought this one for a photoshot for a magazine. If our customer doesn't want it, I'll try to turn it into a mobile prop...
The "mouse" actually·works·(four contacts for directions that is). smilewinkgrin.gif

My colleagues and customers know me too well - they wouldn't be surprised, I guess... smile.gif

Clemens, Wear a proppeller hat and you for sure would not draw attention!

OBC, yeah allmost exactly like that. I have a project it would fit into nicely. Front Yard Weather Station transmitter.
I tried them out when I got em, and they do reach that far. I heard a CB transmission from the interstate, so a software filter would be needed. The signal out is AC with DC bias at ~5V with a transmission voltage swing of +/- 4V. Wouldn't be to hard to translate that with a Max1270.

I was rather disappointed to find that the 'toys' like these I've pulled apart use a COB on the back of the LCD which contains everything and thus the LCD's cannot be re-used. Well, not without more effort than I'd put in smile.gif

As a case, keyboard and tracker ball they probbaly have a place but I'd be wary of spending too much money.
