What kind of cable should be used for serial comms from the BS2 to a PC. for a distance of 50-60 ft.

    You'd like something that would minimize the amount of noise picked up externally and between conductors in the cable.
    One question is how many conductors you need. A lot of serial communication doesn't use the "handshaking" lines like
    DTR and RTS. You may just need a ground, receive data, and transmit data. If you need handshaking, the specific signals
    you need vary from device to device.

    If you don't need handshaking, a simple cable with two twisted pairs would work well. One of each pair is used for the ground
    connection.

    If you need some handshaking lines, get a cable with twisted pairs for each line you need, again with one of each pair used for
    the ground connections.

    Cat5 would work pretty well.
