Prop Magazine, March 2008

Fred HawkinsFred Hawkins Posts: 997
edited 2008-04-03 00:39 in Propeller 1
Careful readers may recall that I have been pushing for a magazine that summarizes the more interesting of this forum's threads.

What I mean by "magazine" is a link and text thumbnail guide back to the threads. Think of it as a windy (and current) version of Graham's Good Thread Index.

I tipped into a more active mode this morning after I read the CPM thread.

The most recent comeback on a magazine was to put it on wiki, but I am reluctant to force yet another url on people. If someone else wants to do that be my guest but I, for one, am not interested in contributing or frankly reading a wiki.

I did take·a look at the size of the "problem" this morning. Since Jan 1, there are about 750 active threads. That's a lot of material to commit to memory even if one strips it down to the best of the best. Having three messages that do that -- January, February and here, March -- would be much simpler than scanning those 8 pages of 100 topic titles.

Using google search lets us find particular topics but it's not useful for organizing the state of the art.

So here's my proposal.

This start message will be edited by me to summarize this month's threads based upon both my reading of the forum and replies to this message. Importantly: If you feel that a thread is worthwhile ("aha!" or "Works for me!") please add·a reply message and I will add it to the magazine.

Fred

ps: reminder to the commercially-minded. Notice the 'advertising' possibilities. Just don't promote something that has been introduced a couple months back and has no material change since.

    Fred,

I think that is a great idea !
With so many threads to go Thu, it would be hard to organize them in small groups or chapters with more post's added daily.
I was thinking about your idea. It's a great one and one I think many readers will benefit from, so I'm going to throw this idea at you.
Maybe, you can pick a topic of the week, let's say and we (the readers) can review that one. Changing the topic every week or whenever you would like.
For the newbies it would be something new to learn and for the die hard prop users is would be a great review or refresher.
Maybe spawning new idea's ? or just finally working on that project I haven't gone around to getting at.
Just a thought and my two cents worth.

    This month, how about?:
Servo control motion with the Prop.
How to move servos with the Parallax Propeller.

Rob, if there's a good servo thread or two this month, then sure it'll be listed.
And if you spot one that ought to be mentioned, just reply here with its link and some prose that let's people know what's being promoted.

What do you think about having a separate website for this? I just threw something together in Drupal for kicks:

    propeller.splendora.com/

This *cannot* be a permanent home for this project, but we can play around a bit for now. Feel free to make a login and post links / comments.

    Stuff that works:

    1) Front page - mashup of all content.

    2) Link exchange - List of links in a monthly format. Links are tagged and tags are searchable I believe.

    3) Blogs and blog posts with comments.

    Stuff that could be improved:

    1) The look of it. I'm no designer :) But I do know how to theme Drupal very well so if someone helps with the design I can implement it.

    2) Entering links could be simplified.

    3) It could have a tag cloud and possibly other ways to navigate tagged content.

So let me know if anyone's interested in continuing with this! I'll donate what I have so far and help it to grow if someone provides a nice permanent home for it!

When a new·month comes around, for instance April: start a new thread called "Prop Magazine, April 2008".·

Essentially all that will be interesting about each "issue" will be the first message with the links and summaries.
So reading them serially should be easy.

The process breaks down, sort of, when no one suggests any threads to be added. (Then an issue is as good as it's editor).

However, there's no time limit on when a thread can be added to the magazine.

Notice that·anyone can be·the editor by starting the "Prop Magazine, [month year]" message.

Btw, can someone explain how to get an image embedded in a message as opposed to merely adding an attachment?

This is why I thought a separate site would be nice - no thread floating issues, automatic formatting, easy data entry.

Oh well seems Fred is not interested. It's on the back burner until someone resurrects it with some interest :P

Just knocked this one out as proof of concept. It's another URL, but very easy to read, post, etc.. The advantage is news over time archives. I'm happy to toss it, or add others to it for posting, etc...

Was gonna do it earlier, and the thread bump triggered it now.

I thought I would give this a bump and say what a good idea it is.

I actually think it is something Parallax might consider, some sort of news letter emailed out once a month, could contain new products etc as well.

    Graham,
Har! You should like it, I lifted the idea totally from your insider magazine.

    Here's some suggestions for additions...

    PropGFX updates, Howler (Hardware projects)
    LCARS, TVirc (Software projects)
"Easy 5v Interface" (useful chip that Rayman came up with)

@Fred, if you continue this, I plan to take a PDF snapshot at the
end of the month and post it to a accessible location.
(A sample of what I have in mind is attached.)

Awesome work! After seeing this, it's becoming obvious why
it's so easy to loose information in this forum--March being a
typical month theres a *LOT* going on with Propeller.

BTW: Has anyone noticed the message stats compared to
    BASIC stamp recently? Incredible.

getting longer. Two days left for suggestions, corrections.

I will probably will break out the assembly, spin, and prop innards into separate sub categories within the basic, b and beyond, advanced headings.

Plus add a category for programming with solder.

Depending upon whether it makes sense (enough material to warrant the bother) I may add a section labeled objects.

This is looking great and I have made a bookmark folder for these threadssmile.gif. Would a weekly one be better so its not as long?

On weekly issues -- a year from now, reviewing and keeping track of 52 threads would be daunting.

On length -- once this magazine is done, I will go back and use formatting to make it a faster scan. That should help, as long as the formatting is spare.

On why blogs and wiki's are not a good alternative -- for the sake of·incremental updates, categorization is made much harder. ·

Fair enough. 52 threads is a lot.

I declare this issue finished with only highlighting left.· Attaching the text file for quick saving.

If anyone wants to try their hand at being April's editor, just start a thread named 'Prop Magazine, April 2008' and I will relax for a month.

If I was to make one comment it is that it might be a bit too complete, highlights might have been enough and then you could elaborate a little. With just titles and so many of them it is a bit like looking through the forum itself.

Having said that completeness is good but can anyone really keep this up?

    Graham,

The issue does sprawl a bit, but I was interested in providing each level of reader -- noobie, can swim with the fishes, and the big fishes -- something to read. The beginner threads will always look more or less the same, but out on the skinny branches the forum does make progress. Compilers, anyone?

Maybe six months from now, it'll be enough of a memory jog to make March's threads come back to life.

Making this magazine was pretty simple. I just used Notepad to maintain a text file and alt-tab to add a line and link as I kept up with the Forum. Really, anyone could 'edit' an 'issue'.

Formerly I used my browser to bookmark interesting threads. That resulted in a two huge folders called "Propeller" that I hardly can bear to look in.

On keep this up, maybe. After lurking on the Forum for eight months, I found that my grasp of topics was turning to mush. Making this magazine refocused my attention on what I was reading. So, I find making an issue useful, to me. Would anyone else be interested in publicly sharing their 'grasp'? I don't know.

    Fred

ps, care to edit my txt file? That could work too.
