Solar power revisited

Since the stock markets and economy slowed down, there has been a lot of hub-bub about new solar cell technology.· Has there really been a break-thorough in the technology or is this wishful thinking.

One obvious improvement is that some cells are now flexible.

If seems to me that the only real large production of solar energy is mirrored heat collectors that convert the heat into high pressure steam to drive conventional turbines. Coal fired and even nuclear power plants all rely on the steam turbines to actually produce megawatts of power for urban grids.

    You don't even need steam...

Build a large tower with a wide 'skirt' at the base so that it looks like a flattened funnel placed upside down. Let the 'skirt' be above ground, and the area under flat.

When you heat the tower with mirrors, it'll cause the air trapped inside to be heated and rise. This will draw in air from the bottom.

Place wind generators in the base.

This isn't just a cooky idea. There are plans to build a GIGANTIC version in Australia.
