propplug drivers [Edit: new PropPlug works]

Hello,

I've used a USBtoSerial device from parallax, for about 7 months now, with the drivers installed.

Today I installed the PropTool, with the option to also install the drivers.
After that, I connected the just arrived propPlug, the leds flashed a bit, and then went off.

Windows Vista said it was installing the drivers, after a while it said the drivers couldn't be installed.
Then I downloaded the FTDI drivers2.0.0 from the website, and launched that.
Vista said the drivers were installed and ready to use, but even after a reboot the leds were still off.
The PropTool recognised it as a COM5 port, but the powered propeller board (switch state 1) couldn't be located.

Any idea's would be great.
Kind regards,
Robot Freak

Maybe I should start with an easy question:
when connecting the propPlug to a serial port, is it supposed to keep a led active?
    Because mine isn't...

No, the LEDs only flash when programming.

Thanks, so that means I've got to check the propTool...

Still no detection from the propTool.
The windows hardware manager is showing the propPlug as COM5, no errors.
The propTool detects COM5, then prompts that no chip is found.

I've got the protoboard powered by wall power supply, 7.5 volt.
PropPlug attached with the chips and usb port facing down.

    Kind regards,

Same setup here (Protoboard, Proptool 1.06, PropPlug (Beenie up) = com5) and works fine.

You say it's 7.5V it is DC isn't it?
Only reason I say that is some people have fallen fowl of that gotcha already! tongue.gif
Odds on is that the Propeller chip isn't running.

    Yes, its DC.
I'm going to give it a try in a windows XP computer.
Maybe that will make a difference...

Do you have another board you can test with?

I've tested with 2 Protoboards, both new ones.
And yes, the USB2ser is still working.

Then perhaps it's your Propplug, are you sure it's being connected properly? Are you inserting it with the badge up?

Yes, I did connect it with the logo upwards.
I used the usb cable that comes with the propPlug, and also an usbcable I always used with the USB2ser.
    None of the combinations works.

Is there any way to test the propPlug?
If the propPlug can send a simple signal, I can test it with my Javelin stamp...

One last thing, you are pluging the PropPlug into the supplied right angle header, and not the usb2ser header correct?

Yes, I used the right angle header.
I'll contact Antratek to see what they can do.
    Thanks for your help!

Today the new PropPlug arrived (finally), and everything worked great!
Vista installed the drivers after two clicks and the PropTool identifies the ProtoBoard.

So that confirms that the previous PropPlug didn't work.

    Thanks for all replies!

    Kind regards,
