Toothpick End Of Life?

Hi,
I am on a project for Washington University in St Louis; we are trying to make a helicopter fly itself.
I need at least
12 analogue inputs,
4 pwm ouputs
1 I2C interface
some program on board to put control I/O,
and some wireless method of sending and receiving small amounts of data from a laptop.
I found the Toothpick! HOLY COW, I was afraid I would have to connect different microcontrollers together to accomplish this, esp with so many inputs required!
My only two hesitations are:
1) Can I compile code to it and have it run on its own? (I think I can, expect I can, and have read bits saying I can; but ive also read bits saying that the toothpick only controls other basic stamps)
2) WHY WHY WHY is it being discontinued??? and what is the preferred method by Parallax for doing this? Should I buy a separate bluetooth and Stamp controller? If so which one meets my other requirements? (esp the I2C)
This is the Best device ive seen for this. Ive noted the Arduino Bluetooth at sparkfun, but i dont think it has enough inputs or outputs. Is there another device besides Parallax and Arduino to look at for bluetooth, quick to development, programmable microcontrollers??
What are your thoughts?
Sean

I would like to purchase from Parallax. What do you recomend?
Thank you, take care,

out all the baby steps first. I guess if I ever get to the point I feel comfortable enough to need one I'll hope it's still available and supported...
