Propplug as simple USB interface?

Sometimes not knowing the rules is good way to think outside the box,
(of course sometimes it just reveals real ignorance... :) I'll risk it..

Question: Alternate propPLUG use.

(Re:That expensive little chip on the propPLUG that handles USB communication.)

Is it possible that it could be used as a go-between to connect simple usb
devices to the Prop?

Unfortunately that won't work. That would require a USB host chip, such as the Vinculum chip from FTDI (also sold by Parallax). It's the same chip used on the Parallax USB Datalogger module.

The USB to serial chip used on the prop plug isn't really that expensive. I believe it's less than $4 in single quantities.

Thanks.. I'm sitting here looking at the datasheet for that chip..
Looks like a handfull at my current level of understanding.

I've got a workaround in mind for my current project, but it sure
would be nice to have prop access to the millions of USB devices out there....

USB is complicated. There is another vendor of a USB host, GHI Electronics. It's similar to the Vinculum, but is a more mature product and has simpler support of USB HID devices (keyboard, mouse, joystick) and USB printers (you still have to feed the printer with what it needs in terms of data). Have a look at their USBwiz.
