Now we are ready for you prop guys, here’s what we need to do for the Embedded Systems Conference.
·
  1. 2 cameras· ,one on the rover and one on the Lander
  2. radio control to the Lander and the rover
  3. control station with 3 screens, data and 2 cameras
·
Any takers?

    Hahaha,

    send me - let's say 5000$
to clear the details about a contract for a 20%-Participation and AFTER THAT

    i start developping it.

Would you send me the money just by nowing my nickname inside here?

    surely NOT !

Your call sounds like "we don't know nothing about microcontrollers -
could an expert group develop a superreliable embedded system for free for us?

don't you think this is ultra-hyper-egiostic?

    Well,
I'f I was smart enough to do this myself I would start with a usb camera and a prop demo board.

    Brian,

Ask for help and people will come running.
Ask for someone to do all the work for you and you will most likely get a No.

So I will start by giving you some help.

I would not recommend USB cameras as they tend to loose communication with the computer once the cable gets longer than a few meters.
The longest cord I have ever seen on a USB camera was 5 meters and that camera was designed for lego robotics.

I would go with a wireless 2.4Ghz camera.
For motor control use the Parallax H-Bridge.
    They can be found here.
They use a servo signal (pwm) and control the speed of standard 12v motors.

If you have any more questions just ask. smile.gif

What do you want to do with the camera? You could look at one of the Hitt consulting video overlay boards. Then you can send your data over the camera links.

    Good idea Steven.

    Brian,
Like Steven said if you use the video overlay module from Hitt Consulting you can display information from onboard sensors on the Rover on one of the Camera displays.
Information on the module can be found here.

    Just a few questions.

With the control are you planning on having a laptop or a DIY control system?
How far away from the control are you planing on having the rover?
How large will the rover be?
What terrain will it have to manoeuvre over/around?

    Brian,

Are you thinking of joining the Lunar X Prize?

If so that would be a challenge and I can't find that much information on it.
How do you communicate with the satellite array.
How are you meant to get the information from the array.

It would be nice just to build it for a home project.

How much knowledge with the propeller do you have?

    Hi,
I'm president of PropelX, lunar X prize team. We are filing our letter of intent at the ESC in April. We are displaying a full size Lander and Rover there to try to secure sponsorship. The control system we are working on now is for earth bond testing. I know enough about the propeller to get me in trouble· and have controlled a couple of robots with it. Our first sponsor is CMP, The parent company of EE Times and the ESC.

As far as the camera goes you best bet would be to use commercially available equipment at this stage to keep your costs down. I believe that parallax sells a camera that you could hook up to a prop with a serial link but I'm not sure. I doubt that you would get a real good frame rate or quality out of it though.

Well good luck with the project. smile.gif

The rules make it a bit hard.
    1. HD video feed
    2. Has to last a night on the moon (2 weeks).
    3. Has to send at least 1GB of data.
    4. Has to travel at least 500m.

It will be hard enough to get a robot to land on the moon let alone do the above.
After you register a team, do they give you any more information?
Like what things to buy to get it to communicate.

As for the earth bound testing. It should be fairly easy to do. The only major thing you have to worry about is communication over long distances (greater than 1km).

Good luck and feel free to ask questions. smile.gif

My goal for distance right now is to make it from the entry way at the ESC to the Parallax display to bug those guys smile.gif, I can't tell how far that is by the map on the internet.

By the way, for those of you who have not heard of Brian's undertaking, you should read his initial thread. It provides more details as to what the team plans to accomplish.

I have a quick question, for the Lunar X prize, what is the definition of a "HD video feed"?

Is it a minimum resolution of any usable kind of video signal encoding,
or only the proprietary patented scrambled DMCA protected HDTV systems they're pushing forcefully nowadays,
which is illegal and infringing to DIY and so must be commercially licensed and equipped at great expense?

I don't know for sure if we are going to scramble it or not ( depends on lunerX's rules, they are not set in stone yet). What I can tell you is that we plan on turning the lander over to a repeater for hams to play with when we are done with it.
