Trying to simplify

Hello, there might be a post some where on this problem, but I couldn't find any after using the search function.

Anyway, I've been wondering if I can attach the Parallax LCD v2.0 or any other 0-5V serial devices directly·to the basic stamps dedicated on board serial port. I've been using the·npn transistor work arround and I would like to know if its really needed, though I'm guessing it is since the NPN work arround is an inverter. But i should be abble to fix that problem within the software. Since both run on 5VDC that shouldn't be a problem.

Also, would attching multiple wires to dedicated serial ports have adverse effects? As in one pair of wires going to a device and another pair going to an unconnectd serial port? It's been a pain unconnecting and reconnecting wires just to program and then view information on the Parallax LCD. And I'm concerned the unconnected wires may act as an attena.

Thank You,

I dont think the wires should act as an antenna as long as you keep them fairly short....

Hi, any of the Stamps I/O pins can be used to communicate serially with other devices that use a 0-5 volt serial signal. Connecting the LCD to an I/O pin ( P0 to P15 ) leaves the programming port free for use with PC communications and there should be no need for wire swapping.

    hope this helps

    Hello,

You cannot correct for the inversion at the dedicated serial port with software. That will always be inverted regardless of the baud mode selected. Attaching it with an external serial port implies that you would connect it for programming, which would then subject the LCD signal line to RS-232 voltages which would damage it. I hope this helps. Take care.
