I am trying to use a Parallax PING))) ULTRASONIC RANGE FINDER to detect sound frequencies.· Does anyone know how to do this or should i use some other componet?

You should use something else. The ping is designed to measure distance not sound, although it uses sound to compute distance.

As far as I know Ping))) will only detect distance. If you wanted to detect sound frequencies I'd imagine you'd have to first capture the sound into digital data, and then analyze the wave forms to find the frequency. Not sure if the stamp would be able to handle the last part or not.

I know I have researched how to detect sound frequencies withe the basic stamp and I was unsuccessiful.· Until, I came across a couple of acticle of people using the PING))) UltraSonic Sensor to measue sound wases know hat it sends out sound waves.

Sound waves of what frequencies? A simple microphone for audible sound (20hz to 20khz). The sonic pickup of the Ping at around 40khz.

The microphone doesn't even pick up ambiend sound.· thats why I thought the ultrasonic ping sensor would work

The point I'm making here is that the Ping Pickup sensor will not respond to audible sounds of 20hz to 20khz. The ping pickup sensor doesn't start responding to sounds until the sounds frequency starts approaching 40khz.
