electromagnetic lock?

Not sure if I've asked this before but what components would be necessary to create a lock that opens electronically?· I'm picturing using the stamp to create the input to open the lock, but
not sure where to start?·

There are many ways to open and close a lock. There are solenoid controlled striker plates. You can also mechanically couple a small motor to a conventional lock knob or drive a deadbolt mechanism with a servo motor. For a standard solenoid controlled striker plate mechanism, download and read the "Industrial Control" tutorial from Parallax (Downloads ... Stamps in Class Tutorials). It shows several examples of how to control a relay, solenoid, or motor using a Stamp I/O pin and a transistor. If the solenoid is designed for 120 VAC, you can use a solid state relay to turn that on and off. Those look just like an LED to the Stamp. There should be examples of that in the same tutorial.

You might also look at the Nuts and Volts columns that you can download from the Resources tab on the main Parallax web page. Some of these discuss and give examples of the use of a keypad with a Stamp. You can also use an RFID reader. Go to the product page for Parallax's RFID reader and download the documentation to see how that works.

There are a lot of cars that have locking solenoids for the trunk. A trip to a U-Pull-It junkyard should get you the parts you need on the cheap. You will need a relay to turn on the solenoid because the Stamp will not be able to drive it directly.
