Measuring Distance with a Hitachi H48C Tri-Axis Accelerometer Module?

Is it possible to accurately measure distance with an Accelerometer? Is there additional hardware needed to make this work? What is the Math involved?

I need to be able to accurately plot movement through 3D space.

Thank you, any assistance is appreciated,

Mike

You won't be able to do it with an accelerometer. There are too many variables to get an accurate value. For instance, are you going up a slight incline or accelerating? If you are going at a steady speed is that speed 0 or 50 fps?

I would think it would be possible. The accelerometer will tell you if you're going up a slope or not as long as you calculate using all three axises. It would come down to some tricky math though to convert acceleration figures into speed.
