Will the GPS receiver still function in a semi-closed area, i.e. a sidewalk with a building on one side, a roof on top of it, and complete outdoors on the other side?

Probably won't work - you need a clear view of the sky.

The reason you need a clear view of the sky is to receive as many GPS satellites as possible.
Most GPS's won't work on less than 3 sats....so if you happen to get 3 sats in a metropolitan downtown....you're lucky.

Give it a try, my Parallax GPS unit suprised the Smile out of me a while ago by locking up in my HOUSE with 6 sats.· I didn't expect that at all and so I've been experminting and it consistently locks up with 6 to 8 sats all the time and I've seen as many as 10 sats a couple of times.· Concrete and metal will kill the signal but if the roof is mostly wood you just may be able to get it to work.

My work has very little reception. All the south facing windows are milar coated and it's a steel structure.
I've got to open a window and line up the GPS with the screen....

It's actually in my school, a little on the mountainside. (I don't know if you'd count Honolulu as a "metropolitan downtown")

    Thanks, I'll try it out.

Dense tree cover will also degrade the GPS signal
