Single Ping Sensor

I have seen robots before that were able to use a single ping sensor as the transmitter and receiver by making use of a 555 timer and an AND gate. Does anybody know how this works or seen a schematic of this? Thanks!

The PING))) is a distance sensor. What you've probably seen is an ultrasonic transmitter and receiver that looks the same, but doesn't have the PING)))'s microcontroller.
