Ignore this !!!

The ignore function. I started thinking about this a while back, like why would Parallax promote this type of egotistical Smile in the first place. As if we all have not had enough of this to deal with in our work place, now it is okay for anyone that " thinks " they are better than someone else to shut them out. My moral standards dictate that everyone else is equal, and i would never stoop that low to actually place someone as being non-exsistant. If someone was being persistant on directing personal stuff at me, then i would get Parallax support to deal with them. So having raised the issue, i only want to hear from Parallax on this, and have them explain why this was implemented, and why it serves any real purpose.

I can't speak for Parallax, but they have mentioned several times that the forum software was developed by someone else and that it's hard to change (for example to fix the search function). I suggest that the "ignore" function came with the software and it's just not important enough to devote the resources to remove it, then have to make sure that removing it doesn't break the rest of the forum software.

I can't speak for Parallax either, but I don't see anything moral, anti-social, or inappropriate in a function which permits you to determine how much email one gets. That's how and when I use it.

I've been on this version of the Parallax Forums since the inception. Here are the three occasions I remember using ignore, rather than instituting an email filter at my end:

    1. Even as much as they try to avoid it, SPAM occasionally gets through the Parallax barriers. Due to the nature of how the email messages from the forums are constructed, it's MUCH easier to stop it here then at my end. It may take multiple filters at my end to do what I can do with one command here.

    2. Parallax can not monitor this forum 24/7/365, so occasionally an ongoing thread about something in which I have no interest gets going. More often than not, it's political or quasi-political in nature, and generally revolves one opinionated person who wants to take on all comers. In this case I prefer to abide by the old email adage "Ignore all twits"; therein I set that one member to be ignored.

    3. Language issues will cause me to ignore other members. This is primarily in the area of ongoing swearing or ad hominum attacks. In 40 years of BBS and Internet messaging, I don't abide by either, and don't know many who do. Parallax takes care of these things, but I don't need that kind of email in the interim!

Last but not least, the IGNORE function is optional. If you don't like it, don't use it. Since it's there, and an integral part of the purchased dotNetBB Forum Software Package, I see no reason to remove it. I can confirm Mike's suspicion that it came as part of the package, since I use other dotNetBB forums.

    Regards,

    Bruce Bates

The bottom line is (as was already mentioned) that this feature is an integral part of the software which we cannot disable (at least not easily). That said various forum software functions seem to be part of a love/hate thing. Some forum members love them and some hate them. We have attempted to fix (or at least disable) certain problematic features such as the Poll feature which generated more complaints than useful information. You can always ‘ignore’ the button itself. When you ignore someone’s messages they are simply filtered from displayed messages. Only you would see that. Anyone who has not ignored a person will still see their messages. It’s not for us to say the feature serves any real purpose. A feature only serves a purpose to those who use it and we cannot make that choice for our members. I have seen posts where forum members have asked how to stop ignoring someone because the hit the button by accident. Take care.

The right to speak does not imply the right to be heard.

You turn your radio off, not because you think you "are better" than the people talking on the radio, but because you have right to listen or not listen.

I don't work for parallax as you know but you did post this is a public forum so....

I use the ignore list. and perhaps I'm who your talking about.. but yes everyone is equal and I don't ignore every new member on the forum until I deem fit they are "worth hearing" but after reading post by people who have no useful info and only seem to say "look at all of the stuff I know, go read the manual if you want help" I find it better to just ignore them.

I guess it's just the kinda guy I am. I also take the shopping and Hispanic channels off my TV listings (ignore them).... perhaps my censorship is unjust.
I consider my self having a very high moral standard.... I'm going to sleep just fine knowing I use the ignore list.

I think I was trying to figure out what the button was and I unknowingly ignored Mike Green once. it was like throwing 1/2 of an encyclopedia away! I fixed that right away!
