Issues with 123 Robotics Experiments for the Evil Genius

I am following the directions laid out by the book 123 Robotics Experiments for the Evil Genius. I've soldered the board the way the author wants, installed the Basic Stamp 2 chip and downloaded the compiler. But when I try to run the simple "Hello World" program, the Stamp Editor returns a message saying that it can't find the Basic Stamp 2 chip.

I checked that there is power running through the board - and through the chip. When I Run|Identify, I get a Yes on Loopback and a No on Echo (but sometimes this comes back Yes).

Also, I am using what appears to be an rs-232 serial cable.

Does anyone know what could be happening?

I am a newbie and would appreciate any help you could give me on this.

Sounds like a bad connection somewhere with the sporadic loop back. Try a new cable, and check all the connections. The loopback is simply that 2 pins of the serial cable are connected together. If it gets it sometimes, my guess is a crappy connection.

You should be using a 9-pin straight thru cable. Check pin 2 on each end of the cable - they should be connected. Also check pin 3 on each end - they should be connected.
