Could the BASIC Stamp be adapted to HO model railroading?

Absolutely! Download and take a look at the Applications Notes Document for the PBASIC Stamp BS-1 (516 KB) at the following link:
http://www.parallax.com/ProductInfo/Microcontrollers/BASICStampDocumentation/tabid/440/Default.aspx

The BS-1 is the least capable of all the PBASIC Stamp products, yet look at "Fun With Trains" in that PDF, and see all the things they were able to do. This was a Parallax Trade Show demonstaration program, if I remember correctly.

Above and beyond that there are even more things that can be done using the PBASIC Stamp BS-2 product line. The possibilities are only limited by your own mind and budget!
