bs2e lookback?

Greetings,

I searched around the forums and strangely, not a single match for the word 'loopback' when using the search feature. "There were no matching records for your search."

So I'll start a fresh post.

I'm brand new to the BS2e, and it's working just fine, but reading through the manual (web-BSM0v2.2.pdf) it seems to indicate that when using the Basic Stamp Editor (V 2.3.9) that "Identify" showing "no" for loopback on the serial port (I am using a real serial port, not USB-Serial) may indicate an issue.

It works seemingly fine, just wondering if I'm missing something. Continuity is fine from end to end of the serial cable to the chip, I can load/run programs fine, I just want to make sure I'm not missing something.

The manual does say specifically "may not be using a standard BASIC Stamp development board". If that's saying Loopback only works when buying a parallax development board, that's probably why it doesn't work. I have the bs2e module directly on a breadboard.

So two questions, should it work, and does it gain me anything if it did?

Thanks for indulging me..

    netmask -

First, you have correctly diagnosed the non-problem, and you're not missing anything except a possible diagnostic aid. Indeed, on Parallax Carrier Boards, a loopback connection is present. You can add it to your board, if you choose to do so by tying pins 6 and 7 of the DB-9 connector on your board together. That's all there is too it.

Just for future reference, if you'd taken your search to the PBASIC Reference Manual, and searched for "loopback" in the PDF, you would have found essentially what I've written here. The PBASIC Manual, and the PBASIC Help file are probably the first places you want to consult.

In closing, to say the native search engine on this forum is no prize, would definitely be an understatement. However, the Home Page of the Parallax web site (top right side) will allow you to do a complete Google Search of the Parallax web site and these forum in toto.

    Regards,

    Bruce Bates

    Bruce,

Thanks for your fast response! I'll read the PBasic manual as well, and noted on the search feature.

Hopefully any future questions will be more worthy of peoples time here :)

    Thanks!
