I just stumbled upon this and thought it might be useful to someone. It is a serial loopback tester for xp/2000, and no install needed. Different baud rates can be tested, and has a calculator also. It also shows the transmit and receive times which may be helpful. Originally for an AVR mcu-- max232 -- i tried it with a stamp and works, as far i can tell. It needs VBRun60sp6.exe installed on your puter. Only if there was a usb version?

Both loopbacking and pinging are very worthy diagnostic tools when communications seems to bog down. You don't really need a lot of software to go with them.

Nonetheless, we all have our preferred software tools to make the job pleasant and easy. I'd use 'terminal.exe' with RS232 loopbacks. No need for VisualBasic and the software has a screen showing what is send and another screen showing what is received.
