How can I input from basic stamp to downloaded 'computer oscilloscope'?

My question:
An internet address was given along with a schematic that has optotransistors, which can be used to feed inputs to the downloadable·'computer oscilloscope'.·Are there other circuits, such as voltage dividers, that could be·used?

    A search on the web will come up with some of these
    circuits, however, optoisolation is still needed to protect
    the computer in the event of a short or component overload.

    Some computers have a sound card input while many
    portable computers have only the headset input jack. The
    ratings between the two are significantly different and
    should also be a consideration.
