I've not heard of rechargables in a CR123A size. You could certainly use something like this as long as the output voltage and current were adequate. I think the Penguin draws about 170mA average when moving and the batteries provide about 2.7-2.8V each for several hours.
You would need to use some kind of external charger designed for the batteries.
I glanced at some of the ads I found with a quick websearch. They have about 1/2 of the current capacity of the disposable CR123As (700mAh vs. 1400 mAh). I see no reason why they wouldn't work.

A similar deal can be found here. These are lithium ion batteries (the kind that have been known to catch fire if they overheat while recharging or short internally during use). So use and charge at your own risk.
