Forum very slow...

This forum has been very slow to load this weekend. On Friday it was returning only 503 errors for a while.

  • Same observed here in FL, US. The onset of the slowdown seemed to correlate with the forum update alluded to in Announcements.
  • The forums are going through an upgrade process and migration to cloud based system so there may be outages for the meantime.

  • For the last two days I've gotten 503 errors fairly commonly when reading and posting. And yes, it's been slow too.
  • And yesterday when I returned to check on a few things, I found myself signed out. No problem I thought, just sign myself back in. There was one, the old password did not work, and a new one was fashioned. It was accepted.

    Hello Forumistas,

The forums are back with a new version in place. We are working on an issue that may prevent some users from logging in. Users who have a cookie set to remember that last login do not appear to be affected.

  • I just swapped the site up to a bigger hardware configuration that appears to be handling the massive influx of web bots much better. Being in the cloud lets one do that in a matter of minutes. I'll continue to monitor the site's performance through the weekend and pop back in if there is any more trouble.
  • Great job. Much snappier here.
  • I can see you're using Amazon AWS -- good move! For those nasty bots, I'm pretty sure Amazon has both manual and automated means to null route the really pesky ones.

    It's much more responsive now!

I also like the much-more inclusive "who's online" feature below the bottom of the page. You can just scroll down there if you actually care.

  • More Timeouts and extremely slow if it doesn't timeout

  • With the upgrade, I am now getting a security warning. It looks like the site's trying to load an external copy of jquery via a non-https URL. Since the site seems to be loading a local copy of (a newer version of) jquery a few lines later, I suggest removing the external reference altogether. At the very least, please update to https.
  • Oh yeah.
...requested an insecure script 'http://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.7.2/jquery.min.js'. This request has been blocked; the content must be served over HTTPS.

I have been moaning about that mixed content, https/http, for years now.

Perhaps it was narcissistic of me to scroll down to see my name there. But mainly I had to see other names. The old forum usually just listed me and one other person, and I knew that wasn't right!

  • Where's the "Posts" count gone?

  • Often I get timeouts, so I don't get to know the post count is missing ;(

  • Well....

Another morning that Parallax.com is still 'taking too long to respond' and my firewall is still reporting this site is trying to 'load unauthenticated script.'

    ???

Are you having the same problem with the forums? The two sites seem to be responding at the normal rate for the last 36 hours, at least in the US where you are based.

Which browser are you using? Looks good on Chrome.

    Chrome is also my browser.
  • It's been loading snappily here in Scandinavia for the last 30 odd hours. Chrome and Firefox the same.
  • .... I am stuck trying to recall a fading dream or was I 'sleep-typing.'

Is there anything I could have changed that would apply only to this site?

  • It's been fine for me since late Saturday, but some pages are loading slower than others, but only enough for the difference to be noticeable. If it doesn't completely go away in the next few days, here's a tool to help:

  • Still quite slow for me. Not sure if it is the internet or the website itself :frown:
  • It works fine for me. Very speedy.
  • Plenty fast enough here.
  • Noticeable faster all around this morning as compared to my status post on the 14th. Most pages are lightning fast as expected.
  • Since the site now uses Amazon AWS, speed at any time is more likely (except in times of congestion above the current server allowances) to be related to a user's own routing. Amazon is everywhere...literally.
