Self balancing robot

I'm starting a ew project of a self balancing robot. By now I will use this robot as my "inspiration"

I have some questions,

Have anyone made something like this before using servos as the main motors?

Can I use a sonar to measure the angle of inclination, or is a better idea to use infrared transistors with their emitters to measure the angle?
