  Chris Savage has a clock that he used the 74HC595 Serial to Parallel with a BS2. Probally a good place to start.

  For start, you can use the 74HC595. Pretty effective and ideal.

  Can the 74HC595 chips be daisy-chained together?
  Is there any way to combine many of them to one IO pin outputting serial data?

  The answer would be in the PDF, but as I recall from memory you can daisy chain it. Double check as you need the PDF anyway to write the bug right.

  I have daisy chained as many as 8 with no problems, but I imagine at some number of chips you will need to add drivers to the gate, register clock, serial clock and serial clear lines since they would be driving all 100 chips in parallel.
