Looking for a socket/socket 0.1" adapter

I have designed this great product for Brilldea. I'm very excited about it. On the product is 0.1" right angle headers for the various connections required to the device. The primary connection means to the device will be a cable with individual conductors and an appropriate 0.1" housing with socket pins. Then when the header and housing are mated on the PCB, the housing doesn't hang off the board. That is to say that the 0.1" header is set back from the boards edge by about 0.55".

Now - I had a bit of inspiration strike for an accessory design for this new product. The accessory though, I would like to mate directly to the main PCB without a cable. Naturally, the part needed would be a PCB mounted, right angle socket. However, the sockets that I am seeing from SAMTEC and others in the Digikey catalog have a housing length of 0.35 inches. The right angle housing can be mounted right at the boards edge of the accessory, however it still comes up short from fully mating with the header.

So - I am wondering if there is such an adapter as a socket to socket housing adapter and then I can put right angle pin headers on both the main board and the accessory board. I haven't seen this type of part for electronics before, but there is so much I haven't seen.

If such a device doesn't exist (or is expensive) I will have to go the route of using a really short cable or find a socket housing that is longer than 0.35".

I would put a right-angle socket on the mating board, then use one of Samtec's SSQ-series M-F connectors to span the gap.

Perfect!!! Sometimes I get so fixated on a particular solution I can't see the proper solution right in front of me. I was staring at the SSW/SSQ datasheet last night and kept wishing for a socket/socket header.

The other option (depending on how many you require) is to buy a socket with extended pins (wire wrap style) and bend them in a vice, being careful to clamp the socket end of the pins to prevent stress on the socket housing. Phil's suggestion is simpler.

Thanks Cluso. The solution needs to be easily and repeatedly manufacturable and provide the best quality in looks and function. Therefore, if I was in a pinch I'd reach for the vise, but the requirements of this assembly will probably be heading down the path Phil suggested. I have already ordered samples to prove the design out, so next week Tuesday or Wednesday I should know how it works.

Does Samtec cover the shipping to Singapore for samples?

A couple weeks ago I ordered samples of a right angle header, surface mount header. I needed to review the placement pins on the underside of the plastic part. I placed a sample order on Samtec's site. Following my order, the on-line system said there wasn't payment and shipping was free. Great I thought.

Over the next couple of days thought I had several confusing and conflicting e-mails. One e-mails asked me to log in and pay for the samples. I did, it was only US$2 or US$3 dollars - no biggie.

A couple days later I went to my office where I had the samples shipped. I had a UPS packages from the USA with the samples in it. I also had a UPS package from some where in Asia with samples in it. I think somehow my sample order was passed to the Asian office and then double processed by both the USA and Asia.

So - overall, yes they covered shipping.

I have since met up with a Samtec rep from the Singapore office. Next week I am getting together with him and he is bringing the samples with him.
