Computer vision progress?

It would be great·to have a robot recognize my voice and my face. In my imagination this robot could spot me in a crowd and even return to a recharging station when it sensed its current was droppng. How close are we? What's been done so far?

You just missed out on the $99 Woot Rovio robot, but·see http://www.roborealm.com/·for one vision software option.

Not sure this temporary offer to buy it for "half price" ($39) is still good. http://www.roborealm.com/woot/rovio.php

erco, thanks for the info. The price is not an issue. I will follow up on it. I thought there would be more interest in the subject. I will also study what Hanno Sander has done with camera vision.

lardom, It is not lack of interest in voice and facial recognition that is responsible for the lack of responses. A lot of people are very interested in the subjects, but doing either one is turning out to be far more difficult than first anticipated. Like a lot of the things people and animals do without any apparent effort, having a computer perform the same functions is proving to be extremely difficult. The difficulty involved is certainly giving us an appreciation of what an amazing machine our body and brain is.

For more info on facial recognition see:

Kwinn, I agree the brain is amazing. I am in awe that we have a couple of robots on Mars that obey commands from people here on earth. There even may be members of this forum that contributed to the Mars Rover project. This forum presents the opportunity for a global conversation with some of the best programming minds around. A lot a what I read from them is stratospheric. Their view of what's possible is a lot better than mine. Sorry for wandering. I'll study the sites you mentioned.

BTW, that $39 Roborealm offer is still good. Their "this week only" is the same as stores that perpetually display a "Grand Opening Sale" banner.

Check out OpenCV for vision processing routines. I don't know if there is an equivalent frameworks for Audio. Learning OpenCV is an excellent book which describes the routines.

For Stereo vision look at the Surveyor web site (Surveyor.com). I believe Roborealm(Roborealm.com) will interface with the Surveyor Stereo Vision System.

Also for stereo vision hardware($$$) look at videredesign.com
