Jim,

Will we get another read-only migration and a chance to evaluate before the switch is flipped? This is very important! Once the new forum goes read/write, we're past the point of no return.

Hi Phil,

Yes, I think we should do one more converions pass on the entire system and open it up again for examination. The user community has found issues in the past few days that we didn't find in out evaluation. I welcome the peer review.

Got my password reset and mailed to me and checked out the new site. Very readable on the iPhone. Yay!

A few observations:
• On current system, my birthday is correct. On new system it's 12/31/1969
• On current system, "Show my age" is set to No. On new system it's "Display Age and Full Date of Birth"
• My AIM screen name on current system got moved to ICQ Number on new system
• Current system is set to "Hide my email address". New system shares contact info with Everyone.

1. Added birthdate conversion error to the bug list.
2. The user profile Birthday privacy setting defaults to·Display Age and Full Birth Date. I have not located a global setting that defaults that setting to Private (my preference). We might try running a database script after the next migration test to set that default globally.·
3. ·Added AIM to ICQ cross-pollenation error to bug list.
4. Adding email address issue to bug list with higher priority. Email addresses should be hidden unless member explicitly makes it public.

Lots to do..... :)

The Parallax Forums (RC1) is really close to the final product. All of the forums have been migrated to the new site. These forums have been set to Read-Only on the RC1 site to avoid posting on the wrong site. There are a pair of new forums available on the new site. You can post your thoughts and suggestions in the Comments or try out all the new toys available in SandBox II, the sequel.
Wrong: you are allowed to edit your own posts

LOL! Too true! It's like adjusting the valves on an old VW engine. You spend what seem like hours adjusting, tightening, checking, backing off, tightening, checking, ... until you finally get it pretty darn close. Then you think, "This is good enough, but I know it can be just a little better, " whereupon you end up wrecking what you've accomplished and have to start over.

There is one significant difficulty remaining. The new site does not directly support the concept that your login name and your screen name are different data elements. In vBulletin, your login name IS your screen name. That isn't going to work for a number of our members.

I am testing a set of modifications that will allow us to retain the screen name, hide the user login name and authenticate with an email address. That's how close we are right now.

I agree that it is a nice feature but why would it be a problem for some members?

I see. I was thinking along the lines of people needing(?) to change their username periodically.

Hi Sam,

The new site is off-line while we work out the user account modifications. I'm finding out that this just looks like it was easy to do :)
