Direct sunlight display

I'm using a lot of displays, and I love them all.
Some of my ideas involve the use of a display on a battery operated unit (mainly Propeller).
Up to now the best LCD displays I used for this scope are the 4X20 units.

Are there other options or suggestions?

It would all depend on what you need to display and how you plan to power/drive it. I like the look of VFD but they are not power mizers.

I need to display some data on it, and depending on the case it should be seen from less than a meter or 3-4 meters. Using the displays with bigfonts (for a number using a 3X2 space) it works, but I have not much space for them. Moreover a battery operated unit should work all the day. With 6 AA Ni-Mh I was able to operate 2 serial displays, a GPS and the Propeller protoboard for 8 hours.
This way I could write bigfonts on a display and more data on the other display with regular fonts.

Reflective LCDs like those made by Powertip work fine in direct sunlight - I've tried one.
