I totally understand why you would downgrade to XP. However, it would be easier to upgrade to 7.
In 7 however, there is no option to have a XP start menu style. VERY annoying in my books.
If you are going to have to spend money to change from Vista, I would also have to recommend going to Windows 7

·Window 7·which will cost about ( $ 150.00·so··How Ever This dose not come with a book at this price·)·and just install it you have a·product code that will come with the disk·make sure that you have a product code with the disk·I have done this in the past when I built my own computer
Do not use an upgrade disk to this that might not work very for you at all
I do not use upgrade Disk because first of all that cost more and do not work very well for me
If you need to know to install the disk just Email me or PM me and I will help you with it
I hope this helps

It is locked to the computer it's installed on for life (cannot be used on a second computer even if the first one dies or is destroyed).
You cannot call Microsoft for tech support (must be provided by the installer).
You are technically not supposed to install it on an existing computer, only a new build for resale.

So far I have found that Vista does not like to be over written, and it kicks another O/S install CD to the curb. And with no DOS (c:/format / u) I don't know how to
clear the hard drive.
I was really trying to avoid having to buy another hard drive. But it looks like My only option. Vista has to go.
I've tried installing XP(using a windows XP O/S CD). When the Welcome to Microsoft Windows XP install screen comes up, The install XP option is grayed out.
I have the option to check system compatibility,This takes Me to the Visit compatibility Web site,From there I get system compatible.
I still don't get the option to install XP.
I have a DELL Inspiron I1720 with a IntelCoreDuo T5250 CPU 1.5GHz 1.5GHz and a 32Bit O/S and 2038MB RAM.with Vista Home PremiumO/S,
·bought new late 2007
Is a new hard drive My only option for the XP install?
Is there a way to clear the hard drive with Vista?

Have you tried booting directly to the install disk? You will probably have to press the right key on startup, and then boot strait to the CD drive.
Good idea,I'll try it.

The only fix was to use a external USB wireless since no driver existed for the wireless card I could get the bluetooth to work but no go on the wireless nic
I would also try calling Dell and see if they have a Back up disk for that computer in Window XP just an ·
in Windows XP then you should be able get a back up disk but tell that you have a bad hard drive so that you get the right type of·back up disk
If that Product Key That you are going to use on this Lap top is also on a working computer it will LOCK your Product code on both computers and you will not be able to use either one do not do it this way
Do not have two computer on at the same time on the INTERNET or go back and forth between two computers and use· them on the INTERNET· with the same Product Code
Yes there is look at who make the hard drive and go to there web site and down the troubleshooting hard drive troubles
There a file that will let you write 0 and one 1 to the hard drive How ever this will delete your hole hard drive compile clean
Then you will be able to Install Windows XP
Use the DOS Version· you will need a floppy drive or some have CD drive version as well
You must use a CD burning program (such as Nero Burning Rom or EZ-CD Creator) to burn a CD from the .ISO image.
If you hard drive is real large in GB it may take 4 to 6 hours for this to be done

You are technically not supposed to install it on an existing computer, only a new build for resale. This is also true
That is why when·I Buy a new computer·and want the new operating·system like Window 7 I will buy OEM disk when I buy the new computer that is also why I built my computers
It is locked to the computer it's installed on for life (cannot be used on a second computer) This part is true.. ·<<< ·how ever this part is Not·True·(even if the first one dies or is destroyed). I have my computer die so many time and made a new ones and still use the same product code on the new one as long as you do not have two computer on the same time on the INTERNET or go back and forth between two computers and use· them on the INTERNET you be alright
The reason I know this is that One time on one of the Product Keys on Window XP that I have I had to have Microsoft ·Reset that Product Key so I could use it again
When you buy the upgrade disk·you already have a Product Key· I only·upgraded ·once and had nothing but trouble with that computer and would not do it that way again
I hope this helps

I tried Booting to the XP install CD. Every thing looked good and it appeared that XP was going to start. Then I got the Blue Screen of DEATH! luckily some white text popped-up and I had a driver issue. It turned out to be the WiFi driver.I Think Bill got Me again, as the laptops only INTERNET access is with WiFi. But I could be wrong.
I'm still trying to get around Bill. LOL
Just to clear some things up
A: I have all the "back up/recover" CDs that came with the laptop from DELL and they work.
B: Vista is working the way Bill intended (Bill has Santa locked into an END USER LICENSE AGREEMENT he can't get of. no MIT for Santa)
C: I have some programs that wont run on Vista
E: I bought a legitimate XP O/S, trying to stay legall
One last thing.
I can't see the differnce between either net and WiFi as far as a driver goes. I thought the two were pretty much the same on the software end?

If you do step up to win7 use the full pro version. It has better networking and wireless than any "home" version. The crazy difference is pro doesn't come with all those time wasting games.
Bitlocker is the only difference between win7 pro and ultimate, the price difference for the average person just isn't worth it.
Win7pro has the xp emulation mode IF your computer has visualization support in bios.
Try virtualbox www.virtualbox.org, or VMware player www.vmware.com.
Win7pro and virtual box works really well on my 3+yr old toshiba A105.
If you can't get XP or Win7 to play nice on you computer then try to find a linux distro that will, then run xp in virtualbox.

Tough to do really. Everyone has a completely different experience and skill set. I've been using it pretty much exclusively since '96. My mother uses Ubuntu and seems to manage ok.
Its an incredibly flexible operating system, but like anything different it has a bit of a learning curve. Often, you have to look a little harder to find applications that do what you are used to doing on Windows and they mostly have different user interfaces. If you are reasonably resourceful and know how to search the net effectively, most problems can be solved fairly easily, but there are times things can be a little frustrating (but almost never more than that stinking XP install I spoke of above). Unfortunately sometimes you just have to bite the bullet and install windows in a virtual machine. Having said that, XP _always_ installs very quickly and cleanly in a VM, and actually often seems to run better than on the bare metal. AutoCAD is the only program I need a VM around for now, and I use that so infrequently that I keep the VM archived on my server and just copy it across when I need it (it takes up about 15G on the disk).
The trick (and I don't know why this isn't more widely trumpeted from the mountains) is to buy hardware you *know* is supported.
There are multiple ways of doing this. If you want to buy a widget, get on line and search for the widget and see what peoples experience with Linux have been like.
My fav though when buying new hardware is to walk in with a Knoppix or Ubuntu live-cd and run up the hardware myself. On the odd occasion I've had a store refuse to let me try before I buy, so I just go elsewhere (but I always make sure I visit that store with my newly purchased hardware to let them know their inflexible sales staff/policy has cost them a sale).
I guess at its core, Linux is all about scratching itches. Most software available for Linux is there because someone wanted to use it, it didn't exist (or it only existed on Windows), and so they wrote it (and that might mean they actually wrote it, or they paid someone else to write it for them).

Thanks for the feed back
I'll stick with windows in one capacity or the other.(Vista or PX)
I have used the XP virtual machine CD on My Wifes laptop.(A clone of My laptop)Vista O/S)). It worked great. It took a while to load and it runs in RAM not on the hard drive.

I can't get XP to load because of a driver conflict with the WiFi hardware, the WiFi hardware is built onto the Motherboard so I can't remove it to avoid the conflict long enough to get XP loaded.
The only way I can get the XP install CD to run, Is to Boot to it on start up. Then I don't get the option of what drivers to load.
I think if I start out with a new blank hard drive, I wont have Vista blocking Me and I can install the XP O/S like normal, leave out the WiFi driver to get XP up and running ,Then use the 10/100 wired Ethernet connection to retrieve the right WiFi driver.
Finding the right WiFi driver is a whole other issue.
This is where I'm at.
Thanks for the Reply
