Cannot detect Javelin Stamp and it is Hot

Gosh!! can someone help me out? i just bought a Javelin Stamp module and inserted it onto Board-of-education, which i previously bought as a complete robot kit with Bs2sx module. After replacing the Bs2sx module with Javelin, i cant detect it through Javelin Stamp IDE and the module was v hot.

what am i suppose to do? do i really need to buy Javelin own stamp demo board?

You don't need a Javelin demoboard. The Board of Education will do.

Few things to check:
Is the javelin inserted in the right orientation?
Do you get 5V between javelin pins 21 (VDD) and 23 (VSS)? If not, the javelin
on-module regulator is defect.
In that case you can try powering the javelin with 5V from the BoE
to pin21 of the javelin. Be sure to disconnect javelin pin24 (VIN) from the DIL24 socket.
If you feel uncomfortable doing that,·contact Parallax support first.

Do you use a USB BoE? What USB2SER cable do you use?
Have you installed the latest usb drivers?
Have you read this thread:
http://forums.parallax.com/showthread.php?p=656527

If the javelin still is not recognized after checking the above,
contact Parallax support for replacement.

Thank you for your prompt reply!

Yes i am using a usb to serial cable for the connection. The Board-Of-Education is Rev C as printed on the board itself. I think (/not v sure) i have the stamp in correct orientation too, ie the circular-shaped regulator is closer to Vin and Vss of BOE after inserting.

I have installed the drivers too. Prior to replacing Bs2sx with Javelin Stamp, i did a final comfirmation using Basic Stamp Editor to do Identify check, it can detect Bs2sx on it.

I had also checked between javelin pins 21 and 23 it shows 5 volts, however, i still cant detect the Javelin with Javelin IDE.

That circular shaped 'regulator' is in fact a coil (the regulator itself is a smd chip)
for the switching regulator and it is indeed located near VIN.
So it is correctly oriented.

You could try to power the javelin via its pin21 as described (pin24 disconnected).
That way the javelin gets a regulated 5V from the BoE.
If that still leaves the javelin unrecognized, contact Parallax support
for replacement.

Oh.. sry i noob in this. Do u mean tat i will have to bend the pin24 of Javelin stamp so tat its pin will not be inserted?

That is the idea, but rather than bending a pin,
insert the javelin in a DIL24 socket, from which pin24 is cut off.
Then insert this socket with the javelin into the BoE socket.

Hi, i have did just that by bending away pin 24 so it will not be inserted. The Javelin IDE shows:
Testing port: COM1
[Debug]Found connected Javelin Stamp, now testing for power
[Debug]Resetting
[Debug]Found connected Javelin Stamp, now testing for power
[Debug]Resetting
[Error IDE-0056]Possible Javelin on COM1 did not respond
[Debug]TSXComm::AutoChoosePort - unsucessful
[Error IDE-0054]Unable to find a Javelin on any port

What does this mean?

Open IDE menu Project->Global options
and select tab Debugger.
Select the com port assigned to your usb cable.
Add the comport if it is not listed.
Then click ok to close the option window.
Try identifying again.

Thank you once again for the quick reply. I use back serial port cable and i have chosen COM1. Doing identify or TestConnection still doesnt detect the Javelin, there is a YES for loopback however. Other than that, there is no Device name.

Since you have the USB-BoE, did you mount the 1k resistor between
pin2 (SIN) and pin4 (VSS) of the DIL24 socket on the solderside of the BoE board?
Without it the javelin might not be recognized. The MUST-READ thread I posted
few posts back explains why.
If that doesn't resolve the issue, you·should contact Parallax support
for a replacement.

Hi, Peter may i know if USB-Boe means that the Board-Of-Education comes with USB connector? cos mine actually dont but it is RevC. So do i insert back pin24 after soldering the resistor?

I hv attached pictures of my boe. Will Bs2sx module works with the soldered resistor if i wish to use back?

Hi peter, i am able to detect the Javelin Stamp already, thanks. I inserted back Pin24 and had the resistor before i can detect it. However, the Javelin stamp starts to get real hot with pin24 inserted in.. Will it cause any problem?

You can leave the resistor in place. You can go back using BS2sx with resistor.
The javelin does get warmer than a BS2sx but that is normal.
If you can detect the javelin now, as you say, and you can download
programs to it, I think it will be ok. Conclusion must be that there was
a bad contact between javelin pins and socket pins, that is resolved
by the multiple chip insertions.

Ah... it is driving me nuts... now that i use USB cables, i cannot detect the javelin stamp again. Where can i get the drivers from? i have installed the USB drivers (FTDI VCP) from the disc provided to no avail. I have seen you asking me abt the type of USB2SER cable i am using, but i am not sure either how can i check the type of cable and install the right driver?

I have also gone into the global-->debugger tab to try and the com port. But·i am unable to input into the COM port textfield, nothing appear in the textfield for whatever things i hit on the keyboard.

Any particular reason why you can't keep using the serial cable?

Anyhow, here you can download the latest FTDI drivers

Click in the textbox then hit backspace twice. I suspect there are
two spaces in the textbox preventing any input.
