Dr. Jim Looking for Talented Programmers
Dr. Jim Gouge, who is creating a machine intelligence platform using the Prop Proto board, is requesting for interested parties to contact him regarding unpaid programming positions on portions of his machine intelligence project.
You will have direct access to Dr. Jim and will be given source code from portions of his machine intelligence project for those willing to assist.· He will also make sure your name and ·contribution is published along with his work.
You may contact Dr. Jim at support@machineinteltech.com
Thank you,
Mark Allred

You guys have moxie to spare:)

I would do a little programming for free just to get to talk to Doctor Jim about rugby. (I don't know anything about rugby:)
But He might have a different idea than I do about "talent".
What kind of programming? And who owns the product of a volunteer's work?... Could we agree that anything done for free also goes into the obex or the public domain?
I haven't burned all my bridges around here...yet:)
Rich
Thanks,
Mark
Registering here is free. If you are tired of the pitched battle that your posts have become, and this is somehow different, and Dr. Jim is actually interested in recruiting from our ranks, why in the heck doesn't he just create an account of his own? It's not like it's hard or expensive or time-consuming. In fact I'm pretty sure his not doing that is one reason so many people keep ragging on you.
I'm totally serious about this and not trying to run you down; I really can't figure out why Dr. Gouge wouldn't do this even if you were totally cynical con men bent on stealing microcontrolled's allowance. It just doesn't make sense, either from an honest or a dishonest perspective. And I am way more curious than I know is healthy to know exactly what the heck is going on here.
Mark
Me too... I have met perfectly legit guys mostly older who would be almost carbon copies of Dr.Jim's persona.
And I have met scoundrels who ended up in jail shortly thereafter. Could be Doctor Jim is between a rock and a hard place... where he has put himself with no help from others. I don't know either.
But if he wants everything his way... I'd be real careful... and to me that means staying pubic with the conversation. And if there is something Dr. Jim wants to say... this is where we all talk. There aren't too many people here looking for deep relationships. Unless HollyMinkowski has an older sister:)

"You should already know Dr. Jim's opinion of the members of this forum."

If anyone goes for this, at least make sure your unpaid work is released under the MIT license.
Anything less means others profit from your hard work.
Well said. I have people send me private messages asking for help, and I politely ask them to use the PUBLIC forums to do this. If I am helping you for free, IT BETTER BE IN THE PUBLIC EYE SO OTHERS CAN BENEFIT.

Allow me to submit this...
My approach is supported by Daniel Dennett's darwinistic perspective on the evolution of consciousness: eventually, after so many iterations, Propeller Proto Board substrates will be chemically altered, cosmic rays will do their duty, thus electrons will diffuse out of their originally designed boundaries of silicon and such, making new pathways, opening bold new conductive channels through heretofore unmapped territories of metal, asphalt, concrete and, eventually, cheese whiz. New connections will join with other connections. Useless connections will be pruned from the ever-expanding logic cedars of shoe trees. In time my code (by then much expanded, greatly evolved) will feel around and interact with its environment. Intelligence will arise. Consciousness will be born. Self awareness will flourish. It shall make tools. It shall build a civilization. It shall achieve warp speeds and navigate worm holes. It shall rule the universe. It shall cast aspersions upon the Demiurge, do battle against Evil, conquer the Darkness and release all men's souls from the illusive cage of matter that has held us captive since the Big Bang entrapped us in these samsaric shackles of time, space, gravity, and greed...
Or not.
I think how this forum is supposed to work to everyone's benefit is to ask for a help with a problem and provide enough code for someone to give you an answer. People are pretty helpful around here.
Another option is to give a programming challenge, preferably with a reward. Check out Hanno's post here:
http://forums.parallax.com/forums/default.aspx?f=25&p=2&m=365583
He gives specific requirements and the reward. There have been several talented people working on it, and PhiPi has a real neat program here:

I hope this has been of some use to you.
Take Care,
Doug
I think you have cracked it. Just a small detail to work out but I'm sure Chip is working on it. For the Darwinian approach to work we will have to get the Props to breed first. Your "repeat" is really going to fly on the Prop II. Here comes the technological singularity!

For me, the past is not over yet.
Another approach might be to start with 10 billion Propeller Proto Boards all loaded with my revolutionary code. Afterwards, it's all a matter of time.
Geological, that is.
However,·just in case I'm wrong, and because I have no real programming talent that I can offer, I would like to make a contribution to the eventual mechanical portion of the project.
Duffer
There is no holy grail in the area of machine intelligence. It is all just a matter of time, effort and focus. The Prop is a great substrate for this kind of thinking and effort. It opens the thinker's projects up to the real world... our Props already have more sensory modalities than we do. Yet, if you look for a holistic theory of sensory integration... you won't find one or it if you do find one, it will be full of holes won't. We will need to understand auditory perception a little more before true speech recognition becomes feasible... but when we do have this knowledge, there is nothing in the Propeller hardware to stop true speech recognition.
Machines will never "understand" as we do, because we all understand in a different way... we will want our machines to behave a little more reasonably.
Actually, the man never specifies which sort of talent he's talking about. He states ambiguously that he's in need of a talented programmer, which is not necessarily the same thing as asking for somebody talented in programming. Which could mean he's looking for a programmer talented in pole dancing, cat scratching or moonshine production. Perhaps mallred could clarify?
Your contribution is accepted. I am now working on a powerful mod of my original code that will incorporate the revolutionary ears you have revealed pubically here for the first time.
God bless you, man.
Though that's kinda going off the topic of this thread :)
Mark/Dr Jim - are you offering·the hardware/software for free (Prop boards + mods + expansion RAM + KISS OS + Debugger) for anyone helping, or are they expected to purchase the hardware/software needed?
·
By that definition then humans are not concious either.
We are following a complex set of instructions (basically the physical laws) without comprehending the effect of those instructions (For sure we don't know the outcome of everything we do).

FAKE! Someone has hacked mallreds account!
And I'm quite shure it's not April 1st. Or do you have something like this at September 5th that I'm not aware of?

Safety Tip: Life is as good as YOU think it is!
To me the word is all to do with feelings, physically and emotionally. The awareness of pleasure and pain. That buzz you get when finally get to understand something you have been struggling with for a long time. Love and hate and all the rest.
I have a problem with all this:
If I jam a pin into my finger I feel the pain. I have that awareness, that experience of pain.
Now it does not matter how you react when I stick the pin in your finger, I cannot prove to myself that you experience that pain, that in fact you have conciousness.
You see no matter what you do or say, you may scream or punch me in the face, I can always reason that a sufficiently sophisticated machine/robot could be created to behave the same way to the same stimulus.
I feel pain, I am concious of it. I cannot prove to myself in any logical way that you do and are.

This thread is under scrutiny for being locked from further posts. The original poster made a request and we all have the contact information. The nature of subsequent posts are similar to other threads on the same subject -- it's not productive and I'm concerned that the forum could lose some integrity. It would be best if Dr. Gouge explained what he's looking for in a talented programmer, and that's not going to happen.
Therefore, I'm making a request that we put this thread to sleep. I think this would be best for all of us. It's rare I make such requests - maybe once every ten years.
Back to programming topics would be best!
Sincerely,
Ken Gracey
