SX Blitz -CLOSED-

Hi, I have not learned anything about the SX and would·LOVE to learn it as I learn more about the prop.

I am looking to get an SX Key/Blitz, as it is the spendiest·item needed and would deplete almost all·my·cash.· Since I do not get an allowance·and spent much of my savings at the prop expo NE, I was wondering whether anyone is anyone willing to part with an SX key/blitz, and what I would have to part with in return?· smile.gif

Thanks.

If you want something really cheap, build the Fluffy programmer. Silly name, but it works very well. I made a PCB for it at home.

Leon, what is the fluffy programmer? How much is it?

    Thanks

Also, it seems as though the one thing the blitz can't do that the key can is do the debugging... Can someone describe what the process of debugging does?

The parts for the Fluffy programmer come to under $10, IIRC. You do need a programmer for the PIC it uses, but that's easy enough to make.

I am definitely going to make the fluffy.

    DIY for the win! smile.gif

    Can the fluffy do debugging?

No, it's just a programmer. You are welcome to mine if I can find it, I can't see me ever using an SX chip again.

Okay, I am about to buy the blitz. What else do I need?

    - the sx, of course
    - 50mhz resonator

    Anything else?

    Thanks.

    Vaati;

If you wish to experiment, do yourself a huge favor, and buy the SX-Key. The Blitz just doesn't cut it for experimentation and development work. The real-time debug feature of the SX is an absolute MUST. Wait till it's on sale if you have to.

    Cheers,

Well, I just ordered the blitz... :\ I may order the key later if I want to, but the blitz will do fine for me.

Also, I'm pretty sure the blitz CAN debug--it does the same as the stamp smile.gif :

    ERROR - Can't compile.

    LOL

    Vaati;

Have it your way... you just wasted the cost of the Blitz, because if you ARE going to do SX development you will (realistically) need the SX-Key.... any different approach is futile.

The Blitz CANNOT be used to debug.

If I were you, I'd contact Parallax, and ask them to change your order.

    Cheers,

    Vaati,

With regards to hardware supported debugging, while you may be "pretty sure" the Blitz can be used to debug, I know for a fact that it cannot. I'm the sub-contractor who has been writing and maintaining the SX-Key IDE for Parallax since version 2.0, so I'm not just someone with an opinion.

Of course, you don't need access to the IDE source code to know the Blitz doesn't do debugging. Just try reading the description of the Blitz from the page on the Parallax website:

Unlike the SX-Key however, it does not provide in-circuit source-level debugging capabilities.

    Here's the URL:

    Hello Vaati,

If you are going to do any long term development with the SX series of chips then you may want to pickup an SX-Key down the road. For now using the SX-Blitz is fine. Sure, you can't to in-circuit debugging with the SX-Blitz but I didn't need to do that too often anyhow. If you want a view into the chip to see a running program you can still use the simulator on the PC to try some things out. I have both (SX-Key and SX-Blitz) and use both but the debugging portion doesn't get used that much for my projects. It is a cool feature though if you need it!

Try some of the examples in the SX/B help file and see how they go!

    Robert,

Yes, that is exactly what I am going to do. I just bought the SX blitz to play with the SX and learn about it before I make a decision on the key.

I really am not that interested in seeing all the stuff I need to know displayed in my face; I prefer to work it out on my own, so that's why I didn't get the key.
