Have been looking for Asian electronics bargains this morning.
Might as well post a few I found here in case anyone needs cheap stuff.
(and doesn't everyone need cheap stuff)

- 100x pieces of 5mm 17,000MCD white LEDs with 100x 470 ohm resistors and 100x 100 ohm resistors all for 4.99 and that includes shipping.
The 200 resistors are worth 4.99 alone smile.gif These people have other color LEDs at same price per 100 pieces.
These are so bright each one can make a usable little flashlight.

-Here is my favorite bench top switching supply. I have 5 of these.... 19.99 each
If you were to add a potentiometer you should be able to do 3-12+v continuously
I popped one open and the V seems to depend on the value of the resistor selected
by the rotary switch. These are 2amp supplies.

A very convenient & small tool for testing SMD (Surface Mount Device) components, for example chip type resistors, capacitors and diodes. In addion it has a continuity function. The MS8910 functions as smart tweezers and will automaticly identify the listed components allowing fully automatic detection and measurement.

They also have a nice 13.8v switching supply...I have one of these. $23.99

Not to throw a damper on the enthusiasm...

    > How do they do it?

An employee of ours travels often to Shangdo. She's fluent in Chinese and has lived there off and on for several years. She says that for every one person working, there are 25 to 100 waiting to take over if that one person screws up. Tremendous pressure - and they get paid slightly more than dirt.

No, I'm not saying this as some kind of economic guilt trip. In fact, when she first told me this and I responded instintively with "oh, that's terrible," she repremainded me, saying, "No they actually get paid pretty well for their circumstances and local economy. But they do understand how replaceable they are - they work hard."

I think it's important, for human(e) reasons I cannot clearly articulate, that we think of these people once in a while when we plug in one of those *cheap parts*. Their hardwork makes things easier for us.

    cheers
    - Howard

@Holly, you would really enjoy a trip to the Shenzhen component market in China. You can see anything you'd think about, but buying them is actually much easier via eBay in the US. Some of the capacitor kits you showed look much more practical and cost-effective than those available from Jameco.

The breadboard and jumper wire set is really nice, too. Everybody should have one of those. We're a bit spoiled at Parallax, to be honest. I tell our technical staff to never tear down their prized circuits - just get another board out of inventory. This way they can run their old code examples on working hardware. Some of the stuff Chris Savage wires on the PPDB is nearly a work of art - would pain anybody to see him tear apart his breadboard jobs!

Another great source for Chinese bargains is these guys: www.dealextreme.com. Shipping to the U.S. is generally free, via Hong Kong Post. Order tracking and customer service (via email) are on par with any domestic mail order house. I've bought from them several times and have not been disappointed.

    @Ken Gracey

Those huge breadboards with all the nice jumpers are really nice...I use them a lot.
I'm thinking of moving the 2 sets of pwr connectors to the far left side and using the
new space on the upper right to add a board with a dip propeller in a zif socket, and
there will be plenty of room for xtal, bypass caps, connectors..etc

A HUGEMONGOUS propeller dev board smile.gif
If you guys bought those breadboards in quantity and did this I bet you would sell
a lot of them. The individual breadboards are fastened with screws, this would let
you replace one if the holes started to get loose and wear out. I wish the breadboard
on the professional dev board you sell was screwed on...it looks like it is probably
    glued down?

I'd go nuts in China, I'd have to take a boat back after I bought a few hundred pounds
    of stuff smile.gif

The stuff I listed above from e-lightening is not only free delivery but their return policy is
fantastic! They have a good ebay rating 100%

How long did you search that, um, dare I say, JUNK site? (just kidding) They have some odd finds in China......

Wow, Holly, you really delved into the seamy underbelly of that website! They do seem to pick up where 1950's comic book ads left off. Now, in case anybody's wondering what I've bought, after gazing upon Holly's graphic gallery of gaudy gewgaws and glittery gadgetry, I'm afraid it's pretty mundane:

Precision tweezers for placing SMD devices (#21665):

    sku_21665_1_small.jpg

    Laser line generator (#5928):

    sku_5928_1_small.jpg

Video recorder, disguised as a ball-point pen (#18087):

    sku_18089_1_small.jpg

Okay, the coolness factor of that last item ranks pretty high, especially for $22.20!

BTW, regarding the high-power lasers: they won't ship them to the U.S due to import restrictions.

OK, fine, I'll take back the "junk site" remark.

That site is AWESOME!! I LOVE cheap gadgets!! (and perfect for hacking too!)

The breadboard and jumper wire set is really nice, too. Everybody should have one of those.
Agreed - and since the trend to modules has become more prevalent, I'm really hooked on the male/female and female/female jumper wires - they make connections to pins (such as may be found on the new Voice Recognition Module) a breeze!

This seemed like a good thread to plop this in to. I've seen a few of these ipod touch knock-offs around and I'm thinking of getting one just to see what it's like. They seem to be going pretty cheap on e-bay and maybe could be used in a project if someone was feeling like hacking it
