eagle gerber output
so here is the short story... i have owned Eagle for over 4 years. the commercial version with autorouter and all, but have never been able to understand how to use it so i have been using expressPCB for all my designs. UNTIL UPEW>>> I was able to sit down with the Eagle master, David Carrier, and my eyes were opened. I now have a board design done. but need to understand the Gerber output part. Lots of choices. Can anyone lend a hand?

Eagle creates the data just fine, but every board maker has acquired a different set of equipment to do essentially the same tasks. There are several processes and machines are acquired from companies all over the world.
These tasks are basically creating a visual image for each layer of the board, a drilling schedule for holes, a schedule for plating through holes and vias, a lable layer for top and bottom, and a mask layer for top and bottom.
So all the complexity is about the right files that are needed to fit thier array of machines. In some cases, they may not provide all the drill sizes you speciify. So without a product ready for production for specific board maker, the options look a bit daunting. When you are ready to buy, the board maker will explain which files and formats it wants and what is not suitable.
When a company says it uses 'Gerber files', that means you can begin this final dialogue. In the beginning, it may take of week or so of swapping emails to get down to exactly what is needed.
The bottom line is that Eagle will provide you with very good support if you cannot figure it out with your vendor. They also have a forum that is helpful.

the cam files should be copied into the cam folder. use the 2 layer one for 2 layer boards and the 4 layer one for 4 layer boards.
Fiducial.lbr should be put in the lbr folder. Add this part to 2 opposite corners of your board where it will not touch anything else if you will want your board to be assembled by automated machinery. Do on both sides if you have parts on both sides.
