Free 3D graphic rendering software

Recently, I have been rereading the Hydra text and it generally says all 3D graphics software is costly. Apparently, that is no longer true. I came across Blender, which is now free.

I've just installed it in Linux, but it does install in Windows. Not much to say right now as there is a lot to learn.

Blender is pretty good, I used it about··4 or 5·years ago to play around with some Direct3D stuff. The hardest part is the learning the software itself, but there are also some good tutorials online.

Presuming that the next generation Propeller chip will substantially enhance video buffer abilities, Blender/3D may become are very useful software tool for the Hydra platform.

Read the Wikipedia entry above and you'll see that it was a full commercial product that arrived under GNU license only recently due to bankruptcy. So this seems to me to be a great freebie at this point in time. I'm excited about the opportunities to use this with my 64bit Quad processor set up.

The main point is that there indeed are GNU license graphic programs that can do as much as costly software and can provide a functioning Windows version for free. So don't think you have to buy your way into learning graphics and gaming software. GIMP is the 2d graphics software of choice amongst GNU licensed programs and Image Magik can do a heck of a lot to clean up graphic files in batch runs. The three together provide enough power to be a commercial graphic artist.

    Don't forget Inkscape and Scribus.

Scribus still needs some work, but shows great promise. It is basically page layout software, like PageMaker. For books and such.

Inkscape is like CorelDraw, and was originally written to handle SVG graphics. It has since received enough attention to serve as a fairly solid, if spartan, vector graphics editor. It works with images and transparency too.

Thanks, it really helps people to get started if they don't have to buy the software tools. Any and all suggestions are welcome. Scribus may be a bit of track for game creation in the Hydra; but there is always the need for good documentation. So count it worthy of mention.

3D graphics software requires quite a bit of learning. But with the new 64bit computers, it is getting easier for the hobbyist to jump into doing mainstream quality stuff. Blender/3G has actually created some interesting finished products. So don't ignore it just because it is free.
