  And look for relays that operate on the voltage of the Basic Stamp 2 output and can handle the current at 12VDC that you want.

  I have used Crydom's DO061A with good success directly from the stamp output, it only takes 15mA at the Stamps voltage and can switch up to 60VDC at 1A. Here's the datasheet http://www.crydom.com/en/Products/Catalog/d_o.pdf
