AC Contact Snubber

Everybody knows that at RC network in series with a DC contact switch can reduce the sparks generated.

The big question now is,

How to snub a contact switch for AC applications?
If we try to use an RC network, it would leak some AC currents, creating a dangerous situation.

    Would not ac autosnub when it crosses zero volts?

    After the on/off switch for my little Taig lathe burnt out the first time I used it I put a varistor across the replacement and haven't had any more problems.
