  What exactly would you do with such a device? Use it for lighting or communication?

  Communication.. Might be a way for Parallax to sell more than one prop at a time.
  (Hint, Hint, Beg.. [noparse]:)[/noparse] ) I can't help but think that it would make for interesting projects for students.

  It used to be you could get a plastic fiber link with transmitter and receiver from Radio Shack. The IRED and phototransistor were housed in little plastic shells that included a small "chuck" that could be tightened around the fiber. They were simple, effective, and inexpensive. I agree that something like this would make a nice addition to the product line.

  The ones Radio Shack carried were considerably cheaper and based on the (now obsolete) MFOE71 and MFOD72 Xmtr/Rcvr pair from Motorola. Industrial Fiberoptics carries a cross for these parts. They distribute through DigiKey, but DigiKey doesn't carry this particular line.
