I have been reading off and on in the forum that the duty counter is not suitable for driving a mosfet.· Can someone elaborate on the reason why?

    It's because the DUTY mode pulses can be too short to switch the MOSFET fully on or fully off. As a consequence, the MOSFET can spend time in its linear region and possibly overheat.
