There's nothing like a new idea and a warm soldering iron.
There's an IC, the LM3916, with which you can make a VU-meter in the form of a LED dot-bar (10 levels) display; LEDs, a pot, a couple of resistors and, Bam!· I think that it should be fairly easy to add to a PSP·which has volume enough to drive you into deafness.
I still have some old ExpressPCB layouts for some meters I built some years ago (these actually use the LM3915). These have excellent response, and while the inputs don't really load the signal much I used to couple them via op-amps set for unity gain. I can attach them if you like.
