Installation Problem
Hi Peter,
Josh from tech support and I spent time on the phone attempting to debug the problem.
He verified (hands on) that the hardware is functioning properly.
I am using a Toshiba Satellite notebook computer running Windows XP.
I am using a USB to serial adapter (from Parallax).
We forced the serial port to COM3.
Using "Test Connection" from the Javelin IDE, the following messages are returned:
Found connected Javelin Stamp, now testing for power
Resetting
[Error IDE-0022] Error reading from serial port (timeout).
Windows dialog box says "Javelin not found on any port"
Thanks for any help that you can provide.

Menu Project->Global options, tab debugger, click ... button
and add com port 3 if it is not in the list.

Yes, Josh and I tried this.

the latency timing to its minimum value (= 1) in
the com port property setting?
(locate the com port under device manager).

power the board: dc adapter or 9V battery?
The latter may give problems if the battery is
not fresh due to required current consumption.

do you measure 5V at the socket headers at pins labelled Vdd?
Also, have tried the usb2ser adapter and javelin setup on another PC?
regards peter
It is a 7.5 V 1.0 Amp adapter (Parallax part number: PX7510AWPL05
Also, no I don't have another PC
you can assume the dc adapter and onboard regulator are ok.
The javelin module itself also has a regulator
and it outputs 5V to pin 21 (Vdd).
If you don't have a multimeter, try connecting a LED in series with a 1k resistor
from the socket header pin labelled Vdd to Vss (= GND).
If the regulator is ok the led should turn on (also try to reverse the connections,
the led should only turn on with its anode to the Vdd).
If the led does not turn on either way, the onmodule regulator is defect.

However, when I returned all the components to Parallax, Josh was able to use the system.
Therefore, I suspect that it is PC/communications/software problem.
I assume you received them back so you have them now?
Two things that you can check:
You use the DB9 connector labelled JIDE? (do not use the one labelled COM).
The module is correctly oriented (pin1 near the DB9 connector)?
If both are true, you should first try to find another PC to try if
the setup works on that.
This is a first to hear the Parallax usb2ser cable appears not to work with
a parallax product when connected to a laptop. Could it be your XP installation has the
wrong driver (or·not quite compatible)·installed for your laptop's usb port?
regards peter
the DB9 is connected to port labeled JIDE (I left my configuration in tact when I returned the components to Parallax).
Josh and I re-installed the drivers while he was providing telephone support.
Thanks for your help.
Charlie
