Extending RFID Reader Range

Can I modify the Parallax RFID reader to extend the reading range from 2 inch to 3 feet?
Will a larger coil antenna do the trick?
How many turns do I need?

We have been informed by the engineer who designed the RFID Reader that it is not possible to add a larger antenna or increase the detection distance to 3ft.· We were able to increase the distance from 3cm to 5cm using the card tags.

3 feet? I really don't think so, but maybe someone can correct me. i would think that a higher power output from the tag would be the critical feature for distance

Maybe I should have waited to do that......

The RFID Reader is designed for the EM4100 Family type tags that operate at 125KHz frequency.

You will need to use a·higher frequency system, or use an active tag.

Here's a site which talks about the variations, higher frequencies increase the reading range, but there are drawbacks.
