usb - rs232 converter

My usb - rs232 converter does not have the DSR that is needed for loopback,
is there anything I can do to make it work without loopback?

    No. Some inexpensive RS-232 to USB converters only support the TX/RX/GND signals -- and this is insufficient to support the BS2.

    The solution is to purchase one that DOES support these signals. Parallax sells one from FTDI, and the Keyspan units work well.
